City pictures

For many people, a summer holiday will mean a trip abroad... to a beach, perhaps, or to the mountains. Others, though, may do things nearer to home that are equally as exciting, like a photography project, for example.
Kris Mansfield has just spent his summer doing exactly that... a photography project in the city. "I´d originally planned to go to the coast for a while, but I realized I couldn´t really afford to go anywhere", says Kris. "Then I saw an advert for a photography project round the city. The idea was for absolutely anyone who was in our city during the summer to take pictures of whatever they felt showed the character of the place. Apart from that, there were no instructions!
I think everyone who decided to take part was nervous at first about what they were expected to do, but they soon started getting more confident. I´d just been given a new camera, which was more complicated than my old one so I was a bit worried too, but I knew it was a great chance for me to see what it could achieve".
Anyone joining the project was invited to attend a workshop with a professional photographer first, where they could pick up some tips on taking simple photos. After that, the photographers set off around the city - and have produced some truly amazing pictures. There are photos of art students pretending to be statues in the street, a folk band playing music with a dog "singing" along, and a shot of someone making sandwiches on a table set up on the pavement. But there are just as many pictures of people going about their daily lives.
Local people feel the project has been particularly important as the city is just beginning the period of change and improvement, with a lot of building work. They feel the photos will help provide an accurate picture of exactly what the city was like before all the changes. They hope the next generation will look back at the photos and feel proud of how the city has developed.
The organizers of the project are so pleased with the work that they are planning a free exhibition of the photos in the city library. The photos will also appear in next year´s calendar of the city, which will be on sale in local bookshops soon.
As for Kris, and a number of other people who took part, he´s really delighted with what he´s done and is considering becoming a professional photographer. Not until he´s done further training, though, and become more confident about asking complete strangers if he can take their photo!
